US stocks rallied for a second day, regaining some ground after the worst sell-off of the year on Wednesday. 

But markets got more political bombshells in the final hour of trading.

The major indexes pared gains after the Washington Post reported that a White House official close to President Donald Trump is now a person of interest in the Russia probe. And, The New York Times reported that Trump told Russian diplomats in an Oval Office meeting last week that his firing of "nut job" FBI Director James Comey had taken "great pressure" off of him.

1. Deere & Company reported second-quarter earnings that were ahead of Wall Street expectations, and raised its profit forecast. "John Deere reported strong results in the second quarter as market conditions showed signs of further stabilization," chairman and CEO Samuel R. Allen said in the earnings release.
2. Jim Donovan, a Goldman Sachs executive, has withdrawn his name from consideration for Deputy Treasury Secretary, according to Politico. Donovan was nominated on March 14 and was one of a handful of Goldman alums named to administration positions, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Council director Gary Cohn.
3. The US oil-rig count rose for an 18th straight week. Oil-rig rose by eight to 720, and gas increased by eight to 180. Miscellaneous rigs were unchanged at one, taking the total up 16 to 901 rigs.  
4. Campbell Soup missed on sales and earnings. The company was hurt by higher promotions and weak demand for condensed soups, broths and V8 vegetable juices. It warned that full-year sales could decline.

Bitcoin is at it again. Overnight, the cryptocurrency topped $1,900 for the first time. Currently it trades up 2.3% at $1938.81 a coin. 

Friday's gains have bitcoin up about 102% since March 27. The cryptocurrency has gained in 23 of the past 26 sessions. 

The rally has seemingly been sparked by news out of Japan at the beginning of April that bitcoin was now considered a legal payment method in the country. Along the way, Ulmart, Russia's largest online retailer, said it would begin accepting bitcoin even though Russia said it wouldn't explore the cryptocurrency until 2018.

The gains also seem to be boosted by speculation the US Securities and Exchange Commission could overturn its Winklevoss bitcoin ETF ruling. The SEC was accepting public comment on its decision until May 15, but hasn't yet announced whether or not it will overturn its prior decision.   

Bitcoin has gained 105% so far in 2017. It has been the top-performing currency every year since 2010, except for 2014.

The Trump administration gave Wall Street some great news. Testifying in front of the Senate banking committee on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the Trump administration does not support the separation of investment banks and commercial banks.

Theresa May has made some anti-business promises. The UK's prime minister revealed the Conservative Party's manifesto on Friday, targeting stricter boardroom pay, better worker protection, and defending businesses from overseas takeovers done largely for tax purposes.

Indonesia was upgraded to "investment grade" at S&P. "Indonesian authorities have taken effective expenditure and revenue measures to stabilize the country's public finances despite the terms of trade shock," the rating agency said as reason for raising its credit rating for Indonesia to "BBB-."

Bitcoin surges past $1,900 for the first time. The cryptocurrency trades up 6.8%% near $1,942 a coin.

Elon Musk says Tesla's stock has gotten out of control. "I do believe this market cap is higher than we have any right to deserve," Tesla's CEO said in an interview with The Guardian. "We're a money losing company."

Gap fends off the retail apocalypse. The retailer beat on both the top and bottom lines and said same-store sales climbed 2%, well ahead of the 0.2% contraction that Wall Street was anticipating. Shares gained more than 6% after Thursday's closing bell.

Salesforce beats across the board and raises its outlook. The company earned an adjusted $0.28 per share on revenue of $2.39 billion and raised its full-year GAAP EPS to a range of $0.06 to $0.08 on sales of between $10.25 billion to $10.3 billion.

Stock markets around the world are higher. Japan's Nikkei (+0.2%) led the gains in Asia and France's CAC (+0.5%) is out front in Europe. The S&P 500 is on track to open up 0.2% near 2,370.

Earnings reporting is light. Campbell, Deere, and Foot Locker report ahead of the opening bell.

US economic is limited. The Baker Hughes oil rig count will be released at 1 p.m. ET. The US 10-year yield is up 2 basis points at 2.25%.

Bitcoin's price has nearly doubled so far in 2017, rising from $1,000 at the end of last year to a new all-time high of $1,900 today.
