India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) rolled out a new initiative, called the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), to give more of its citizens access to banking services through their mobile phones, according to Finextra. The UPI will allow users to send and collect money using a “virtual identifier” in place of one’s actual identity. After a send is initiated, users will get a message asking for authentication, verify their identity through a password, and receive their money in real-time. Existing mobile users will be able to integrate other platforms into UPI, while new users will now have access to mobile money transfers, according to Payments Cards and Mobile. India is hoping to capitalize on citizens’ mobile dependence.
