Amazon has made a big move to scale up its payments service.

The e-commerce giant announced at Money2020 on Monday that it would debut the Amazon Payments Partner Program, a new worldwide undertaking designed to make it easier for developers and merchants to integrate Amazon Payments services into their online stores.

Amazon has partnered with third parties such as Shopify, Future Shop, and PrestaShop as part of this program, which should allow the companies to more seamlessly offer it to merchants and sellers, reports TechCrunch.

The program, currently available via invite in the U.S., Japan, the U.K., and Germany, contains three separate tiers and allows partner companies to utilize other services such as account management, technical resources, and even co-marketing opportunities.

This program could be part of Amazon Payments' plan to become more competitive as an online processor, especially for small businesses. 

Amazon Payments is growing rapidly, and TechCrunch notes it had 150% year-over-year growth in 2015. The average Amazon Payments order is around $84, and these two factors together could give the company incentive to expand the platform in order to profit more from it.

The company does not provide a list of Amazon Payments merchants, but more than 23 million customers have used their Amazon accounts to purchase an item outside of the main site, according to Bloomberg. And small businesses seem to like it because the service provides smooth access to more than 285 million Amazon customers.

But Amazon does have competition in this space. Braintree, owned by PayPal, debuted a similar program last week.

Amazon could further improve customer loyalty and gather more data about consumer shopping habits by increasing the scale of Amazon Payments.

The expansion of Amazon Payments is one more example of how the way we pay is changing dramatically and how companies are adjusting to meet those changes.
