Bank of America Merchant Services has announced that it will expand into Europe.

The new unit will work to provide e-commerce, card-present, and card-not-present transaction processing to its clients interested in cross-border services, according to the company. The new services will be offered in tandem with the existing transaction banking offerings from Bank of America Merchant Services. The Europe-based unit supports over 130 currencies. 

The bank hopes that the new division will simplify the payment experience for enterprise clients needing to process cross-border transactions. 

• Cross-border transactions can be complicated and cumbersome. The European division, called BofAML Merchant Services, is offering cross-border services to existing clients, which simplifies the process of international commerce for merchants. And it also offers technology like address verification and 3D Secure to limit fraud and false declines for merchants while keeping the consumer-facing process frictionless and consistent with other commerce experiences.
• And the new division could keep the processor competitive with digital-first processing services. As cross-border payments innovation becomes more common, it’s critical for legacy providers to innovate in the same space. By focusing on an area in high demand, the company could be positioning itself to keep these clients loyal while opening a new channel to increase payment volume.

The payments world is rapidly evolving thanks to companies' desire to match consumers' changing habits and desires. Those companies that do not keep up will undoubtedly be left behind.
